From 1995 to 2000 my studio was located on Main Street in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, but in 2000 my partner Michael Fuller and I built a large log addition to our seaside home in Diligent River. The original home and various interesting out-buildings were built by Michael in the mid 1970s and reflect his penchant for utilizing local materials and his flair for unusual details. The addition now houses my studio, with plenty of workspace and just enough retail space tucked into the corners.

To reach the studio you head west out of Parrsboro onto Highway 209. 12km later you’re in Diligent River. At civic address 9874 you turn off the highway and onto a dirt laneway that meanders for 2 km through blueberry fields and forest made up primarily of spruce and fir. Just when you think you’re lost and you expect hobbits to appear around the next corner, you come to a clearing surrounded by several rustic buildings.

But you’re not there yet. You get out of your vehicle and follow the sign to the footbridge over a 20 foot ravine with a little stream cutting through the middle of it. Once you’ve crossed the bridge you see a large log structure nestled in the trees. The first section you come to is the studio. Come on in and see what I'm up to.

Once you leave the studio you can go outside and around to the other side of the building which is the home part of the equation. The house is perched on a gentle cliff overlooking the Bay of Fundy and Cape Split. Near the front door you can take the steps down 75 feet to the beach and marvel at the view - a whole 2 kilometre stretch of beach with no sign of civilization except at night when the lights across the bay twinkle at you. If you want a change of scenery you can walk the many paths scattered throughout the 200 acre property.
Deer and rabbits are a common sight, as are Izzy and Fica, our tireless canine companions. Don’t be alarmed if Izzy tries to herd you into the barn or down to the beach. She’s a Border Collie and she’s just doing her job, although lately she seems more interested in getting people to play soccer with her.

By now you’re probably ready for a bite to eat. With any luck you’ve packed a picnic and you can take it down to the beach and relax. Afterwards, turn your face to the sun and let the sound of the surf lull you into a little nap, just so you can be well rested to continue your adventure along Nova Scotia's Glooscap Trail.
